My name is Gianluca Musso and in the internet my nickname is M.P.S.
I was born in Savona on the 12th March 1973 under the sign of Pisces. It was my destiny...
My only handicap is that i am deaf. During my birth they incorrectly used the forceps and caused irreversible damage.
This has never been a problem for communicating with friends, in fact, i can speak without any problems and i can also lipread so can understand what others are saying.
I live in Albisola in the Savona province, a mere stonesthrow from the sea and understandably i have grown up by the seaside.
My mother told me that i had my first swim when i was only 5 months old (obviously i was not wearing a wetsuit or carrying a gun) but it was not too long before i was on my first fishing session.
My father, he preferred hunting on land and was really good at DIY. He made me my first speafishing piece of equipment: a trident made with a wooden handle and three nails on one end. At the early age of five I already had my first "weapon".
From that day on i was fishing non-stop, during the summer months (July and August). My prey were the smallest fish, octopus, cuttlefish, flatfish etc.
Soon after i was dreaming about the legendary Sardinia and its plentiful sea-life, and could not imagine that the seabass, dentex and amberjacks also inhabited "my" sea at home. I fantasized about these fish and thought that one day i would travel to Corsica or Sardinia and capture at least one.
I was very young and I had decided to become a spearfisherman, but it was not too simple as my parents, who had never had any problems with me diving with the trident, seeing that I was serious and was dressing in a diabolical black suit to dive to the abyss and catch big fish, were somewhat scared.
Furthermore, stories of many spearfishermen dying whilst practicing the sport, send shivers down their spines and thus they laid many obstacles in my path, saying this sport was far too dangerous for a young person.
I did not want to go against their wishes (at least at the beginning), but now i understand them as i was an only child and when you are a parent you have hundreds of reasons to worry, far too many i think, but understandable.
But i was not going to stay at home getting fat so i immediately started practicing other sports like athletics, waterpolo and even skiing.
Seeing that my handicap allowed me to enter, I joined the world championships for the deaf-dumb.
I competed in Bulgaria in 1993 in the javelin and again in Denmark in 1997 without success and during training injured my arm. That same year i competed with the waterpolo team and we finished in third place.
1997 was the year I changed sport. I decided to give up waterpolo and athletics to practice my dream sport: spearfishing.
That was the start of my long and intense journey in the undersea world and i have not stopped since.
During this time I have learnt not to underestimate the sea; I have learnt to respect it, the rules of the sea are tough and mistakes are costly. I have learnt everything on my own, making errors, but with my meticulous and perserver approach, day after day, session after session I have found my balance and place within this sport.
Even today, with my experience, i still aim to stay modest and want to keep learning from the marine world without discarding anything.
